Peter McElvanna

Proprietor

Peter McElvanna is the Proprietor of The Coopers Tavern located at 20 West Mifflin Street on the Capitol Square in Madison, Wisconsin. When Peter and his wife Amy Marsman opened The Coopers Tavern in 2010, they envisioned a pub that would highlight locally-sourced food and drinks while maintaining a global cuisine - mirroring the couple's own travels and adventures. Peter was born and raised in Ireland. He hails from Keady, a small town in County Armagh. Peter emigrated to the United States and it was his move to New York that introduced him to the restaurant industry and Irish pub scene of New York City. Peter and Amy met and married in NYC, enjoying the city as much as their adventures beyond the city, including some favorite trips to Prague, Barcelona, Cuba, Hawaii and closer to home - the Berkshires. In 2007, the couple moved to Madison and immediately fell in love with the lakes of Madison and the people of Wisconsin. Peter's favorite aspect of the restaurant industry is continually meeting new people, introducing folks to new tastes whether food, beer, whiskey or wine. Peter's travels in the United States and abroad have helped make The Coopers Tavern one of the premier beer bars in all of Wisconsin. The beer list is varied, including local craft brews as well as a wide range of offerings from around the world. Since partnering with Food Fight Inc to open The Coopers Tavern, Peter has expanded The Coopers to the second floor - a space that hosts weddings, parties, fundraisers, and private events. The second floor features seating for up to 100 people and has unparalleled views of the Capitol. By emphasizing hearty, rustic dishes and an amazing beer and spirit selection, Peter has turned The Coopers Tavern into Downtown Madison's favorite gastropub. When he isn't working, you can find Peter spending time with Amy and their two children, or sitting at a campfire enjoying a pint. A big sports fan, he follows Glasgow Celtic - his beloved football club - as well as the New York Yankees, Bucky and, of course, the Green Bay Packers.
